Last week was abnormally busy so I didn't have much time to choose my heirloom seeds for my spare bedroom veggie container garden. I finally took a few minutes this morning and picked them out on HeirloomSeeds.com. Here is my little "trial period" list:
Mesclun Mix Blend - This blend of mixed greens will be my "fancy salad" mix. I've bought packaged mesclun mix at the grocery store often, so growing it at home where it's uber-fresh will be a treat. Leaf lettuce does okay even when it's a little crowded, so I'll just keep reseeding the lettuces in a couple of round pots and picking a little as needed until it runs out.
Tom Thumb - I love butter lettuce and these mini-heads are just too much fun. They grow about the size of a tennis ball, so you can basically pick one per salad. Wouldn't that be easy? I'll have to get a long trough planter for them to keep them from overcrowding, as the heads will need space to expand a little.
Christmas Cherry Tomatoes - Our older son and I hate tomatoes - hate isn't even a strong enough word - but Brian and our younger son both love them. Cherry tomatoes are a good fit because I can just quarter them and put them onto whatever the tomato fans are having while omitting them from the tomato haters' plate. Christmas Cherry Tomatoes grow to about 1" in diameter and they keep ripening over a long growing season, so I can get plenty without ever having an overabundance.
So, three trials. I'll put in the order this week and get started as soon as they arrive.
